Question by MAGSER: what does it mean to lay a horse in betting terms?
you hear a lot about bookmakers laying horses but it is also possible for a punter to do so. i dont understand what it means so any help out there would be welcome. thank you.

Jargon , slang:
To take on a bet – like a bookmaker.
Also:
Lay Off, Layoff – Bets made by one bookmaker with another bookmaker, in an effort to reduce his liability

Doesn’t sound like something that the ordinary bettor should
get involved with.
