With David Cameron and Alex Salmond at odds over when a referendum on Scottish independence will take place, bookmakers Paddy Power have opened a book on the year any vote will happen.

Early odds suggest Salmond might get his way with the date, as 2014 is priced as favourite at 5/4, followed by 2013 and 2015 at 5/2. A shotgun referendum this year is at an unlikely 10/1.

But it’s not great news for the SNP in terms of how any vote would go. Current odds have a vote against independence as 8/11 favourite, with a vote favouring independence priced at evens
